Building Leadership Skills in DC

From power analysis to advocacy, about 25 WDN members who participated in our first “Being An Effective Public Woman” workshop in March 2011 learned how to advance their values and their issues in the challenging environment of Washington, DC. The mantra of the multi-day training was: “How to use your access, voice, and power!”

Members participated in trainings focused on mapping our power, building our case, planning our campaigns, and, of course, lobbying. The members met with several important officials and staffers including Congresswoman Donna Edwards, Sen. Barbara Boxer, Sen. Claire McCaskill, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, senior staff from the offices of Sen. Dick Lugar, Sen. Chuck Schumer, and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar’s chief of staff, and key staff from the State Department and the White House.

We also had time to connect and get acquainted over delicious meals at Nora’s and a wonderful reception generously hosted by WDN member (and lobby trainer!) Cathy Carlson at her historic home in Rock Creek Park.

Those who attended gave rave reviews and suggested that all WDN members attend this training, which we have decided will be an annual event.
